Rosa Hanna Scott was born in East Hampton in 1937 to James and Victoria Nicholson. A proud Bonacker, Rosa graduated from East Hampton High School before attending college at the Apex Beauty School, Dabney Community College, Mary Baldwin College, and Southampton College. She majored in education and art. After living in Virginia for 15 years, Rosa moved back to East Hampton and worked as an arts educator and substitute in the Wainscott School, Springs School, John Marshall Elementary School, and East Hampton Middle School. On returning to East Hampton she met jazz musician and painter Percy Heath and joined the Montauk Artists Association, where she started as a member and rose through the ranks from Secretary to President, a title she keeps to this day. In the oral history, she speaks about the formation of the Montauk Artists Association, the various venues across Montauk the group exhibited in, the securing of the Depot Gallery located at the Long Island Railroad Montauk Station, programs, and exhibits throughout the years. Rosa is also a member of the Long Island Black Artists Association, the Artists Alliance of East Hampton, and the Calvary Baptist Church in East Hampton.Oral History Details
