A sepia-toned photo of two men mining for tourmaline on the Pulsifer Farm in North Auburn. The location was named "Mt. Tourmaline" by John S. Towne (pictured along with a young man from Bowdoin College who served as a summer assistant). The back of the photo reads:
"The John S. Towne mine at North Auburn on the Pulsifer Farm, which he named Mt. Tourmaline. Mr. Towne is pictured at the opening of a 'pocket' - The man in the foreground is a student from Bowdoin College who worked with Mr. Towne during summer months."
