Description

A B/W photograph of the Wiscasset waterfront, with Main St. to the right (the Coca-Cola sign would be on the left-hand side of the street). The hip-roofed building on the left side of Main St. beyond the sign is still standing. The tall brick building at the far right of the photo is no longer there (I think it's about where the Key Bank building is now). The steeple in the center of the photo above the treeline belongs to the 1824 Lincoln County Courthouse. The train tracks run across Main Street along the waterfront (note freight cars to left of ship). The three-story building that is behind the two-story white building by the stern of the ship, is still there. The two schooners (Luther Little and Hesper) that were the much-photographed decaying schooners were brought to the Wiscasset waterfront in 1932 (long after this photo was probably taken). There was a lumber and coal operation on the Wiscasset waterfront that involved both a narrow gauge railroad and coastal schooners. Did the Pejepscot Paper Co. at one time unload pulp wood in Wiscasset?
