A B/W photographic view of the Isaac Douglas House, built in 1834.
Isaac Douglas built this house - settled on Haskell's Island and married Mary Pinkhan in 1829. She was the sister to Will Haskell's mother. Isaac and Mary lived there for five hears. It was built on a lot of 5 acres which was his wife's portion.
Douglasses and Pinkhams made up a large part of the Quaker population Harpswell. The Douglasses came to Haskell Island in 1750-51 (date of deed). As Falmouth had the nearest meeting house many of the Quakers moved to Durham or Litchfield. Isaac Douglass moved to Litchfield when he was very young. Wanting to see his old home after a few years, he rose before daylight in cold weather and with nothing but his axe and gun, walked to the lower end of Harpswell Neck where he spent the night with Tim Pincham. He married Tim's sister Mary, in 1829 and lived on Haskell Island for five years. In 1834 they came ashore and built this house on 5 acres which were Mary Pinkam Douglas's inheritance.Collection
