A color photographic view of Hotel Sea Gables, So. Harpswell. Its name was changed from Hotel Germania in World War I.
Location: below causeway on west side, about 100 feet from Potts Point.
Leander H. Merrow had been a cook on fishing vessels. At sea he married Theresa Kreger, daughter of a schooner captain. Theresa was a good German cook. They took a few boarders at their little home in South Harpswell, then built the Germania, which accommodated 100 guests. The hotel remained in the family for 57 years. Like all hotels, the tourists traveling around in autos cut into business. As the parents were getting older, the hotel was closed in 1954 and torn down.Collection
