Description

A B/W photographic view of the Capt. John Kemp House, Cundy's Harbor Road East Harpswell, Maine. Undated. Holbrook, Abiezer, 1761 (his marriage) before 1784 when Elizabeth was his widow. Date of information below unknown. Cape style. Repairs in kitchen walls indicate a much older interior than now, showing. Now being repaired by a carpenter, owner carefully following original architecture. Present owners: Marty Weeks and Allison Hatch. Bought by Timothy Kemp 1800-02 who later bought 50 acres of Lot #20. When Timothy Kemp died the house and land went to John Kemp and Abiezer, son of Timothy did not get his share until he became 21 years old in 1824. The 1855 mortgage deed was straight borrowing of $520 from Norton Stover (Stover's Point), uncle of the shipbuilder Capt. Norton Stover. John Kemp and Gilman Dresser together repaid money by 1860, so Kemp place was free and clear. For further information see File of N.S.T. on Kemp's done mostly by William H. Waite, direct descendent 1 Hedgerow Place, Wilmington, Del 1987 Miriam Stover Thomas's great-great grandmother, an only child, was half-sister to the Kemp orphans. The Stovers were generous to the older Kemps in their sickness and distress.
