A B/W photographic view of the Pearl of Orr's Island House.
Location: West shore of Orr's ISland.
It was originally a lean-to built in 1812 by Simeon Orr. Ralph Johnson, born on Bailey Island in 1799 , married Lydia Farr in 1821, died in 1880, first lived in his father's house. It was later occupied by his brother Capt. Johnathan Johnson. In the east shore of Bailey Island is a little cove called Smith's Cove, after the original owner. Ralph bought the lean-to from Simeon Orr for $800 with eight years to pay.
Mrs. Harriett Beecher Stowe boarded there with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Johnson when she wrote "Pearl of Orr's Island," hence the present name of the house. The house was improved by Clement Skolfied, who married Ralph and Lydia's daughter, 1875.Collection
