Notes

Silk painting is traditionally an Asian practice but had a resurgence of interest in France throughout the 19th century. Kate Furbish, with her fine art education, would have been very in tune with these trends and likely learned the oil-on-silk technique used in this painting during her time in Paris. The flowers depicted appear to be Cherokee White Roses, a widespread but invasive flower in Maine. The white roses are all conjoined by a leafy green vine, painted on black silk.
