Orr’s connections to Maine go beyond just being the place he was born, raised, and worked. The Orr family first settled in Harpswell, ME in 1742 and is believed to have a familial connection to the first settlers of Orr's Island, which bears the name of the family. Their strong connection to the coast of Maine, specifically Casco Bay, may be an underlying reason why Forrest Orr continuously painted marine scenes. “Three Gulls” is undated but is assumed to be an earlier piece due to the brushwork style and portrayal of sea mist compared to his form in later works.
