A B/W photograph of Capt. William M. Otis, oldest member of the of United Lodge of Masons. He will be 99 at his next birthday. Photo not dated. 4 Jan 1814 - 23 Sept. 1913 William M. Otis was the son of Capt. James Otis, a veteran of the War of 1812, and his wife, the former Betsey Snow of Great Island, Harpswell. He was the oldest man in Brunswick and the oldest member of United Lodge of Masons, which he joined in 1846. He was a Democrat and a frequent delegate to party conventions. He began sailing as a common seaman at 19 and became captain five years later. His last voyage ended in a shipwreck off San Francisco in 1881. He left three daughters, Harriet M. Otis, Mrs. George H. Commings, and Ella Otis, all of Brunswick, Maine and a son, Capt. Albert H. Otis of California. He is buried in Growstown Cemetery, Brunswick.
