Description

A black and white photograph of potter Sylvia Wyler decorating a piece of pottery at her new shop. She is sitting at a table holding the brush to the vase working on a floral pattern. Wyler was working to finish the piece to add to the display at S. Wyler Pottery's first craft show. She and her partner, John Faulkner, had been selling wholesale and at craft shows for years, but decided to open their own shop in order to be less isolated, more visible to the public, and join the community of artisan shops in Brunswick, ME. This photo was published in The Times Record in Brunswick, Maine, on 11/25/1992.

Labor of Love: Creating Art and Community

Notes

Although pottery is one of the oldest human inventions, the art form has never faltered in popularity. Today, ceramic making is used as a way to take a break from the fast-paced society we find ourselves in, while buying it is a way to take a step back from our single-use, throw-away consumer culture. In this photo, Sylvia Wyler, co-owner of the S. Wyler Pottery shop, is seen decorating a piece of pottery for display at her store’s first craft show. She opened the shop after she and her partner, Tom Faulkner, decided to be “less isolated” and more a part of the public community of downtown Brunswick, ME.
