Labor of Love: Creating Art and CommunityNotes
Stephen Etnier (1903-1984) is remembered today for a painting style that mixed aspects of realism and luminism while focusing on industrial and serene marine landscapes. Etnier’s work remains influential today with pieces in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Art Boston, among other collections around the world. One of his paintings, shown here in the West Harpswell School, depicts a coastal marine scene featuring boats docked in the cove. An important part of art education is introducing them to professional artists and different styles of art. Exposing children to this allows them the agency to decide their own personal taste and foster their own style.
