A mounted, sepia photograph of the "Free School Building" aka the Old High School & Grammar Building in use before what is now Hawthorne School, Brunswick, ME. With the students pictured you can clearly see that there are separate entrances for girls (on the left) and boys (on the right). According to the title on the photo's front, the building was erected in 1851. The back of the photo (see Image Management) reads: "Pres. by Mrs. Reed" "Old High School Building Erected AD 1851" and "1st high school in Brunswick located [at the] corner of Federal and Green Streets [where Hawthorne now stands] on land purchased from Miss Narcissa Stone for $1,000. Possession of land was obtained June 1, 1851 and was dedicated December 9, 1851. The building was completed in 1872. On July 19, 1874 the 'High-School House' was damaged by fire." "The above from History of Brunswick, etc. (Wheeler)." Photo not dated.Collection
