A view of Pleasant Street from Tontine Hotel (destroyed in 1904 fire) on Maine Street, Brunswick, ME.
The building on the left was the Pejepscot House, built about 1807, which was a leading tavern of Brunswick and was the stopping place for stage coaches. After the days of stage coaches had passed and the Tontine Hotel had been completed in 1828, the tavern was converted into a dwelling house for Capt. Alfred Merryman about 1863. The Hon. Jacob Abbot occupied the house after the late Capt. Merryman until his death in 1820.
The building on the right is the Lemont Block built about 1870. Businesses have been on the ground floor with the Knights of Pythias occupying the second floor from 1907 - 2007 and who were celebrating their 100th Anniversary and farewell party because they are moving to the ground floor of another building.
