A B/W photograph (ca 1895) of Sue Winchell was born about 1881. She was a talented Violoncellist and a musical artist of rare ability for her time. The Lewiston Journal stated, "Miss Sue Winchell is to be ranked among Maine's most talented and promising young solo artists." Miss Winchell played at the funeral of Joshua L. Chamberlain opening the services with the rendering of a cello solo, "If With All Your Hearts" from "Elijah". Miss Winchell married Dr. Charles Theodore Burnett on December 16, 1914 in Brunswick, Maine. She died in 1962. The Sue Winchell Burnett Music Prize was established in 1963 by Mrs. Rebecca P. Bradley in Memory of Mrs. Sue Winchell Burnett, which is awarded upon recommendation of the Department of Music to that member of the Senior class who has majored in music and has made the most significant contribution to music while a student at Bowdoin College.Collection
