Context

John Gudmans was a handicraft producer located in the small village of Rättvik in the Dalarna region. He was commissioned to create a local village Dala Horse. He then continued to create several minimalist models of Dala Horses, including the Leksand, Sjurberg, and Siljan horse throughout the 1940s and 1950s. He mentored several other artists, including Kaj Hansson. He and his sons continue to make Dala Horses and sell mostly in Sweden, and occasionally in America.
