Dear Stuart,
There are basically two types of behavior to gain control over other people.
One: You pay for their physical presence, during which time they carry out your instructions ( budget, accountability statements, action plans, you know the whole drill.) and
Two: You establish your authority and make people believe that you are the chosen one to spread the gospel of absolute TRUTH and that you have intimate knowledge of the coming Apocalypse. Anyone can be saved if they follow the LEADER.
In short: Leadership can be established through pecunary incentives or through manipulating the mind.
If we examine the world today, we come to the terrifying conclusion that in most cases where people kill each other, it is the result of conflicts arising from various religious fanaticisms.
Most of us know that we lack the qualities that make leaders. Instead, we can choose to give our strong support to someone else, hoping that through our support, he will become the leader.
Then we have achieved our ambition through another person. This explains the loyalty and devotion to the leader. It also explains the subordination of your own personality to that of the leader. There will be no strong leader unless he has strong followers.
It is said that so many lives are wasted; lives of young people who have given themselves over to a cause "greater than themselves" and die for a good cause of their leader. Their reward is to become a martyr. Destruction and civilization falls apart A remarkable observation is that when, say after a century or more, the sorrow has subsided, a poet, for instance Homer, will give an epic account of the fierce and heroic battles; operas (for instance Verdi's Nabucco) will be composed about all our wars. Heroes who fought for the right cause will be regarded as examples to their contemporaries.
The strange human behavior around us, for example in Bosnia, Waco, Texas, Ireland, Lebanon, India, Kuwait/Iraq and Iran, gave rise to the above thoughts.
