Lloyds Bank Plc Weena 14 Postbus 288 3000 AG Rotterdam Rotterdam, August 29, 1988 Mr B.I. Pitman Chief Executive Lloyds Bank Plc London Dear mr. Pitman, As the story goes that England has never been invaded since 1066 when William the Conqueror determined, that England was his personal property. T he Dutch are tempted to believe that, when in 1688 William of Orange (married to Mary Stuart`) came to England and became the King of England, our William was the second William the Conquerer. Of course the English try to legitimize this action because he was the daughter of the 'boss' James II, but after all he remained a foreign ruler to the English people. This year the tricentenary of William and Mary's English adventure is celebrated in Holland by the Dutch, who shared this "Monarch of Enlightenment"with the English. England prefers to celebrate this year the defeat of the Armada 400 years ago and are forgetful about the Dutch interregnum. On another score William and Mary introduced the formal gardens into England, which were later erased by the great destroyer Capability Brown. Recently these gardens are being restored in England as well as in the Netherlands. Lloyds Bank Plc, the Netherlands have the pleasure to present you with a copy of "The Gardens of William and Mary' sponsored by ourselves. You wil notice the black horse logo on the fly leaf. The book may prompt you to turn your home with a garden into a garden. Wish you many happy hours when reading the book Yours sincerely, Getekend Adriaan D. Dirkzwager Manger
