Description
apan's Meiji era saw extraordinary growth in decorative metalwork made for the international market, particularly following Japan's celebrated appearances at nineteenth century world exhibitions. Large cast vessels combined traditional naturalistic subjects with technically ambitious relief work designed to appeal to Western collectors.
This substantial example uses cascading millet or sorghum seed heads and foliage, imagery associated with harvest and abundance. The underside carries a cast Japanese seal mark consistent with the marking of Meiji export metalwork.
