This mixed media landscape artwork was created by Australian artist Alison Willis during the early 1970s and is titled Yinbilliko (To Kindle a Fire). Willis was a self taught folk or naive artist known for pioneering a distinctive approach to landscape art using natural materials sourced from her rural surroundings in New South Wales. This work combines traditional painted elements with Australian tea tree bark, seaweed, lichen, moss, and grasses to create a richly textured and three-dimensional composition. Works from this period reflect her deep connection to the Australian landscape and her unconventional, naturalistic artistic voice. Retaining its original artist label to the reverse, this is a strong and characteristic example of her early mixed media practice.
