Description
Made in England by Shortland Brothers, later associated with Shortland Smiths, this aneroid barometer dates to the 1930s or 1940s. Shortland Brothers specialised in domestic meteorological instruments, with surviving period catalogues documenting their barometers from the mid 1930s. Such instruments brought practical weather forecasting into the home before modern electronic forecasts became commonplace. The stepped oak case reflects the strong geometric influence of British Art Deco design, combining scientific function with period interior styling.

Good vintage condition with age appropriate surface wear, marks and small losses to the oak finish. The dial shows spotting and ageing, with some wear and tarnishing to the metal surround. The barometer is working at time of listing. As with vintage aneroid barometers, calibration may be required for your local area and can be adjusted relatively simply.
