Description

The Mikan mizusashi is one of the recognised forms of Japanese tea ceremony water jar, its rounded shape inspired by the mandarin orange. Its decoration follows the Shonzui tradition, characterised by dense cobalt blue geometric, floral and auspicious motifs. Shonzui originated with finely painted blue and white porcelain commissioned by Japanese tea practitioners from Jingdezhen during the late Ming period, and the style was subsequently recreated by Japanese potters for generations as part of the continuing tea ceremony tradition.
