An original 1884 edition of The Sea and Its Wonders by Mary and Elizabeth Kirby, published by T. Nelson and Sons, London. This Victorian natural history volume was intended to inspire young readers with scientific understanding and appreciation of marine life. The book features remarkable engraved illustrations, including sea creatures such as argonauts, flying fish, and seabirds. The decorative cloth binding is embellished with gilt and printed marine motifs, including a flying fish and coral, typical of the period's aesthetic. A compelling companion to the Kirbys’ other notable educational titles.
This particular copy bears a presentation label from St. Paul’s Wesleyan Sunday School in Waimate, New Zealand, dated 1888 — a significant piece of colonial book history.
