This vintage rotary dial telephone dates to the mid twentieth century and features a classic upright form in black moulded material. The body is finished in a high gloss black, with a chrome rotary dial and printed instruction card reading Listen For Dial Tone, displaying a New Zealand style telephone number format. It retains its original braided handset cord and includes the pull out number directory drawer to the front. While often referred to as Bakelite, the exact material has not been confirmed and may be Bakelite or a later moulded plastic used during the period. Telephones of this type were widely used in New Zealand homes and offices prior to push button models and are now popular as decorative objects, display pieces or film props.
