An exceptional 1930s Japanese mechanical cigarette dispenser, carved from solid rosewood and detailed with fine bone or shell inlay. This Art Deco-era novelty box features a beautifully sculpted 'Pecking Bird'. Tilt the original bone lever stick, and the bird tilts forward to peck a cigarette, which triggers the dispenser to offer a cigarette (or similar).
The interior lifts open for storage, making it both a functional item and a display-worthy collector’s piece.
Crafted in Japan during the interwar period, this piece combines traditional handcraft with mid-century novelty design. The combination of rich timber, inlay, and kinetic movement makes it highly desirable among collectors of Japanese export ware, tobacciana, and wooden curios.

Very good vintage condition. Functions as intended. All decorative shell or bone inlay is intact apart from possibly one piece missing on the top. A rare find, as it still retains its original bone lever stick. Please review photos carefully as they form part of the item’s description.
