A beautifully hand carved Chinese camphor wood box featuring detailed relief carving to the lid and front panel. The central scene depicts a traditional landscape with figures, trees, mountains and architectural elements, framed by geometric carved borders. Camphor wood boxes such as this were produced throughout the mid 20th century, particularly from the 1940s to 1970s, for both domestic use and export. Camphor wood is prized for its aromatic qualities and natural insect repellent properties, making it ideal for storing jewellery, keepsakes and textiles.

C O N D I T I O N:
Good vintage condition. General age related wear including minor surface marks, small scuffs and light edge wear. Brass clasp shows natural patina. Interior clean and solid. The chain that attached the lid to the main box has broken - it is unneeded & is an easy fix. Please refer to photos.
