Acc. No. 81.88.1 Subject Category: Water Company (Artisian) Date or period: 1900 Object: Water pipe, artesian Description: It is made in the fashion of a barrel. There are five concave sections which are held together by an encircling wire. Size: 48 inch length by 6 inch diameter. History of object: This section of wooden water pipe was dug up by Carl I. Verderber on Santa Clara Avenue about 1900. Water was supplied from Artesian Wells located on Thompson Avenue, off of High Street. The water was pumped to a tank on top of the water works building located on Park Street, between Santa Clara and Central. The tank held 240,000 gallons of water. The water was then issued through wooden pipes to the various residences of Alameda. Captain R. R. Thompson was the owner of the water works. This company was founded in 1879. Acquired from: Mrs. M. The offices and tank building of the Artesian Water Company was erected in 1880 and designed by William Patton, architect. Cost, $42,000. Demolished, July 1955, the walls of the building were five feet thick to support a tank containing 240,000 gallons of water.
