Object: Sad iron & heating stand
Description: Sad iron with triangular shaped base, attached handle. Oval on top of iron has a raised number 7 (cast). Heating stand is rectangular in shape and rests on four legs. Made of cast iron, the stand encloses a heating element (pipe with holes to omit flames). At one end is a nickel plated valve and cock for attachment by pipe to a gas jet. Attached to top of the heating stand by two screws is an iron cover (with slit for entrance of sad iron handle) that houses the iron and retains heat from the gas jet. No manufacturer or patent date present.
Size: Base of iron is 6 inches in length, and 4 inches at its widest section. From base to top of handle the iron measures 5 inches.
History of Object: Sad iron and heating stand formerly used at the Alameda Cleaning & Dyeing Works, 2315 Alameda Ave., Alameda, Joseph Koenig, proprietor & owner. This was a pioneer dry cleaning establishment, where benzine was used to clean the clothing. The benzine was housed in large vats in the rear of the cleaning shop.
