Size: L 11 x W 8 1/2 inches. History of Object: Print-out of website information describing the development of Skippy Peanut Butter at the Rosefield Packing Co., Ltd, who, owner Joseph Rosefield. Rosefield, a chemist, came to Alameda in 1913, and built a business of packaging and distributing foods such as coffee, dried fruit, pickles, and jam. Although not the inventor of peanut butter, he did develop a process, patented in 1922, to make a smooth peanut butter which kept the oil from separating. In 1928 he licensed the invention to the company that created Peter Pan peanut butter, and in 1932 he began producing his own peanut butter under the name Skippy. In 1955 the company was sold to Best Foods, Inc., and the Webster Street plant stopped producing in 1979, and the building was torn down in 1999.
