No. 21.38.7 Subject Category: Businesses; Drug Stores Date or Period: 1925 Object: Medical Bottle Description: Apparently red glass bottle (or clear glass bottle stained red by its contents) with cork stopper and label with green and pink (possibly originally red) type logo 'Security Drug Company Inc.' and in green type on white: '1440 Park St. at Santa Clara Ave., Alameda Cal, Telephone Alameda 0024-0029' and typed information: '2% Solution Mercurochrome' and handwritten: 19 Oct, 25. Size: L 3” History of Object: Bottle with Mercurochrome prepared in 1925 at the Security Drug Company, Inc., corner Park and Santa Clara, 1925, owner Henry F. Schuldt (1866-1929). This was formerly the drug store of physician J.A. Riley, and briefly Eberly's Quality Drug Store. Mercurochrome was used as an antiseptic after 1918, and as dye because of its deep red color, but it is no longer sold in the U.S. because of its mercury content.
