Date or Period: 1929 Object: Medal Description: A stamped-out medal, possibly bronze, with crossed rifles behind a circular emblem, depending from two chain links from an inverted trapezoid pot metal bar with a pin behind it. On the pin the letters R.O.T.C. are shown in relief, on the circular emblem is a central stylized dove, within a cross, within a circle with letters: "AWARDED BY POST 939 V.F.W." On the reserve of the medal in imprinted: E. Netherwood, May 15-'29, and the mark: A. O. GOTT, ALAMEDA. Size: approx. L 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" History: 1929 Alameda High School Reserve Officers Training Corps medal awarded to Earl (Richard E.) Netherwood, father of the donor. Richard Earl Netherwood, born 28 September 1911, died 24 July 1974, Alameda. In 1930 the Richard L. Netherwood family lived at 2007 1/2 Lincoln Ave. Richard Earl married Alameda-born Bessie Merrick, whose family had come to Alameda before 1910, and who lived at 1308 Regent Street.
