Description: Recorder encased in varnish walnut box. The front and sides of the box have wooden grills which serve as vents and speakers for the recording device. The upper front of the box is opened revealing a turntable and two reproducing heads, one for recording and the other for playing. On the rear portion of the recorder is a metal plate stating "Sound Scriber, Serial No. CRICRU, Mfd by the Soundscriber Corp, New Haven, Conn., and also what appears to be a foot pedal that is attached by a plug in this area.
Size: 12 inches long, 8 inches high, & 10 inches wide.
History of Object: Early recording device found while moving the contents of the Chamber of Commerce from their building in the 2100 block of Santa Clara Avenue to the basement of the Alameda City Hall. It is said to have been used by the Chamber of Commerce, which was founded in 1927.
