NO. 84.40.1 SUBJECT CATEGORY: Clothing DATE OR PERIOD: 1889–1890 OBJECT: Collar, surplus (demi cape) DESCRIPTION: Underlying material is silk faille covered with black jet beads in a floral design. The collar comes to a point at the bodice and the back. There is open bead work on net and on the shoulders. There is black beaded fringe suspended from that. Lined with black silk. HISTORY OF OBJECT: Originally worn by Clara Watts, wife of Charles Hovey (employed by Otis Elevator Company. They were the parents of Alvin Watts Hovey (born in Alameda 1897) who served for 23 years as an Alameda police officer until his retirement. They lived at 521 Pacific Avenue. They also had a home built at 1357 Regent Street, Charles Hovey was known to have lived in Alameda in the late 1890's, ACQUIRED FROM: Jack Hovey through Anne Kriege DATE: November 17, 1984
