Appears to be hand forged. Shovel bowl has a riveted applied shaft signed in incised block letters "O. AMES," "Crucible Steel," "6." Size: L-42 inches. Shovel bowl L-17 x W-13 inches. History of Object: Coal shovel used at the fuel, feed, & ice yard of August Pearson, old time merchant & resident of Alameda. He later owned & operated an ice business known as the Island City Ice Company, 2310 Encinal Avenue. Mr. Pearson was born in Sweden in 1871 and came to Alameda in the 1890's.
