No. 13.1.16 Subject Category: Household, furniture Date or Period: c. 1880-1890's Object: Food (or pie) safe Description: A cabinet of a dark wood finish raised upon four legs to protect it from vermin. The front of the cabinet has two doors divided into three panels each. The upper and middle panels house finely meshed metal screening. The lower panel has been crudely grained to emulate walnut burl. The cabinet doors are secured with exposed hasp-style hinges. The bottom section includes two shallow drawers with turned wood knobs. The projecting top of the cabinet is supported by an ogee cornice. The interior shelves have the original edging of patterned oil cloth. Size: D-15 x W-47 1/2 x H-64 inches. History of Object: A crudely-built cabinet (probably made by an itinerant carpenter or a family member) for storing baked goods, jams, etc. It was found in the basement of the Meyers House.
