History of Object:
Documents found in the attic of City Hall prior to renovation, in a deteriorating legal size folder (now discarded) with green label on the tab, stating: “Posey Tube”, held together with an attached metal clip (discarded). Refoldered in 2011 after acquisition by the museum.
Documents include correspondence, including a letter from County Surveyor George A. Posey, regarding minimum speed of vehicles in the tube (none below 5 miles per hour, such as handicapped vehicles, buses with governors, trucks, bicycles) allowed during busy hours, and subsequent 1929 regulating ordinance; safety measures (fire, police); Letter to Lochiel M. King (of the West End Improvement Society? - needs confirmation) by City Manager C.E. Hickok stating King should be dubbed ‘father of the tube’, referring to documents from 1919; decision (1928) to naming the tube in honor of George A. Posey; acquisition of land for streets leading to the tube; desired signage (“lights on”), glass in door so watchmen can look for cars; ideas for adjustments such as finishing interior with tiling to prevent darkening from dirt (City Manager B. Ray Fritz, 1936).
