C. 1878-1880 Object: Chair, rocking Description: American walnut Victorian child's rocking chair with cane seat and back, Cottage type circular seat with attached arms. Decorative top railing with five turnings. Size: H-29 inches. Seat-D-14 inches x W-14 3/4 inches. History of Object: Childhood rocker of the late Wm. Frederick Simpson, born Alameda Jan. 24, 1903, died July 23, 1986. Mr. Simpson, past commodore of the Encinal Yacht Club, was in the newspaper business. The chair in turn had originally belonged to his father (Howard Simpson), as a child. He was possibly born in Alameda, between 1878 or 1880? Howard Simpson was the son of Wm. Simpson. The Simpson home was located on Benton Street (west side), near Central Avenue. They are believed to have come to Alameda at an early date. Acquired from: Anita Simpson Date: 9-16-1989
