No. 96.73.26 A & B Subject Category: Citizens of Alameda - Otto Rittler Collection Date or Period: 1920-1940 Object: Fez and carrying case Description: A: Fez made of a heavy maroon-colored felt with a black silk tassel. Fez has initials AAHMES embroidered in gold metallic thread above an embroidered design composed of a scimitar from which is hanging a gold metal Egyptian bust in full head dress superimposed on a crescent. A star is placed in the middle of the crescent and below the Egyptian head. Four colored paste stones decorate the scimitar and one stone is in the center of the star (one of the four stones in the scimitar is missing). Inside the fez is a discolored white silk mfger's label that reads: Quality Fez made by Arthur Ramage Co. Oakland California. The label includes a design of three camels being ridden across the desert. The name Otto Rittler has been hand printed at the two lengthwise edges of the tag. B: Zippered carrying case of black plastic for the fez. Size is 10 1/2" to 12" (width is tapered) x 8". Gusset at bottom. History of Object: A fez owned and worn by Otto Rittler at meetings of a fraternal order at which the fez was part of the regalia worn by the order's members.
