No. 95.97.1 Subject Category: Household, Decorative Date or Period: World War I - 1919 Object: Shell casing Description: Trench art vase made from a brass shell casing with raised and hammered designs of flowers and inscription "Souvenir – DU Fort Souville, DE 1919." Inscription on bottom in incised block letters "75 DE - C USA. Size: height 13 3/4 inches by opening diameter 31 inches. History of Object: Trench art vase made by soldiers in France during World War I. The vase was originally owned by Charlotte Burrowes, World War I nurse. Resident of Alameda since 1925. The Burrowes, the late Douglas and Charlotte, moved into their home, 2019 Buena Vista Avenue on July 25, 1925. Mr. Burrowes, a tugboat captain captain by profession, hauled cable for the building of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges. Acquired from: Doris Burrowes Fereira (daughter of above) Date: 5/13/1995

7/10/2020 MvL: current label: World War I "TRENCH ART" A decorated U.S. military artillery shell that was sold to returning veterans. It has a floral design with the inscription souvenir du fort (keepsake of the stronghold) referring to the U.S Army's stamina in the trench warfare. This item is believed to have belonged to an Alameda veteran.
