HARD-BOUND ALBUM, WITH COVER OF BLACK-COLORED BUCKRAM, TRIMMED IN BLACK-COLORED LEATHER. CAPTION ON SPINE STATES, "LETTERS." IT IS AN UNUSUAL TYPE OF ALBUM, IN THE FACT THAT INDIVIDUAL LETTERS CAN BE ATTACHED TO GUMMED PAPER STUBS.

LETTERS ADDRESSED TO JOSEPH CONRAD, CHIEF OF POLICE, CITY OF ALAMEDA, FROM THE 1890'S TO 1900. LETTERS PERTAINING TO MISSING PEOPLE, CRIMES, ETC., ARE INCLUDED. SOME CORRESPONDENCE INCLUDES ATTACHED "MUG SHOTS." THE ALBUM WAS PRESENTED TO THE ALAMEDA HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN MAY, 1956, BY AN UNKNOWN INDIVIDUAL (i.e., NO RECORD WAS MADE OF THE DONOR), AND NUMBERED "51X."
