Accession No. 11.57.21 A, B, C Subject Category: City of Alameda Date or Period: 1938-1940 Object: Folder, file; photographs Description: Acid free legal size manila file folder with documents and 2 black-and-white photographs in a separate folder. Photos depict young women seated and standing behind a table flanked by four men, in a room with elegantly draped windows and a chandelier. Partial identification in pencil on verso. Both photos appear to have pieces missing on the negative, and B. has a crease at the top right. Size: L 14 3/4" x W 9" History of Object: Documents found in City Hall attic during remodel in the 1990s, placed in a new folder after donation to the museum in 2011. Original folder (now discarded) stated: "softball Recreation Dept 1939-1940". A, B: photos, taken shortly after eachother, of the 1938 or 1939 Women's Champions team, sponsored in 1938 by J.J. Krieg. Possibly the 1938 team, since the folder includes an invitation to City Manager Charles R. Schwanenberg (and spouse) to the 1938 Victory Ball at the Alameda Hotel. Partial identification, added by Chad Barr in pencil in 2011, on the reverse. C. correspondence, including Rules and Regulations, regarding softball competition in 1938-1940. Includes bills from the following Alameda businesses: The Encinal Press - Jas. D. Fayen - Commercial printer (2324 Alameda Ave); Merchants Public Address Service (1838 Ninth Street), and a letter from W. R. Calcutt Hardware & Household Utensils, 1334 Park Street. Otto Rittler was involved in some of the organization of the league but found himself in conflict as he was also coach for a men’s team (Elks).
