Acc. No. 21.34.35 Subject Category: Library Date or Period: 1898 Object: Label Description: Printed paper label, with blanks filled in by hand in black ink discolored to sepia, and an addition in blue ballpoint pen. Printed heading in fancy type states 'Alameda Free Library - Extract From Rules'. At the bottom on the line 'Entered' is a date entered by hand: March 28, 1898. Label is wrapped in plastic with the edges taped closed with paper tape, and on the verso, a typed interpretative label, stating the the labal was donated in 1974. Size (label only): L 4 1/2 x W 3 1/4 inches. History of Object: Early book label, of the type that would have been added to books entered into the borrowing catalog of the Alameda Free Library, stating the rules for borrowing. Verso adds that this type of label was used when the library was located in the West Wing of City Hall, from 1897 to 1903.
