Description: Ornately printed certificate with information blanks filled out by hand in sepia-colored ink. The document also serves as a mat for two sepia-tinted photographs. The certificate is illustrated in black and gold-colored type written in German.

History of Object: Marriage certificate of Robert Heinrich Putzmann upon marriage to Johanna Meierdierkes. Both individuals were early German residents of Alameda; at one time they lived next door to each other at 1515 and 1517 Broadway. They were married on April 3, 1889 at the Lutheran Church in Alameda. This certificate was purchased at the Oakland Museum White Elephant Sale by the donor.
