No. 21.128.25 Subject Category: Citizens of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1950s Object: collapsible cup Description: Collapsible cup, appears to be silver-plated, with lid featuring a girl carrying a package of National Oats cereal. The cup has a handle that folds out of the center and telescopes up in narrowing sections. The bottom is embossed with 'National Oats, you can taste the difference' readable from the inside, and readable only on the bottom with 'patent pending'. Size: Diameter (closed): 2 1/2" x H (extended) 2 3/4" History of Object: Collapsible National Oats advertising cup of the Martin family. The National Oats brand appears to have been first used in 1907, and was acquired by British American Tobacco Company (B.A.T.) in 1967 and either by first or subsequently by Liggett and Meyers, and in 1980, it became part of Curtice Burns Company. In 1993 Ralston Purina became the owner, and in 1994 Ralcorp (owner of Ralston Foods) was purchased by ConAgra Foods. The Oatmeal produced is sold under store brands.
