No. 21.92.1 Subject Category: Aviation Date or Period: 1924 Object: clipping, advertisement Description: Page 148 (and 147) of the Saturday Evening Post of June 21, 1924, having an advertisement for Pennzoil, featuring an image of a biplane over trees, backlighted by lightning, and in one corner, a circular reproduction of a photo with two men, one seated in an airplane and smiling. Page has small tears in various places. Size: L 13 1/2 x W 10 inches. History of Object: Advertisement featuring a - presumably - photo of army aviator Lieutenant James Doolitle, and mentioning him making the first successful one-stop transcontinental flight from Jacksonville, Fla., to San Diego, California, with a stop at San Antonio. James Doolittle was born in Alameda though moved to Alaska when he was 3 and a half years old. The house was moved from the corner of Foley and Buena Vista, to 1620 Foley Street. Doolittle would famously lead a raid on Japan at the onset of America's involvement in WWII, and in 1985 be was promoted to the rank of General. Purchased by the donor on eBay (invoice on reverse).
