No. 21.116.1 Subject Category: Businesses of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1910 Object: Bottle Description: A large-size, clear glass, two-seam medicinal bottle, with a concave and convex side, with a blown neck and lip, with protruding lip. Lip has a tiny chip. On the concave side is pressed in raised letters: 'White Cross Drug Co., Cor Park & Encinal, Alameda, Cal.' Above this, under the neck, is: '3 VIII'. Glass has staining suggesting it has been under influence of varying acids and calcium deposits, such as would occur if it were buried. Underside has embossed letters: 'W T Co. U.S.A.' Size: L 6 1/2 x W 2 inches. History of Object: 8-ounce medicinal bottle produced by Whitall Tatum Company, from the White Cross Drug Co., owner Frank Glands and J. Bussenius, in operation at the southwest corner of Encinal and Park (1269 Park, now approximately the location of Jack in the Box) between 1907 and 1911. After 1912 Adolph. G. Bussenius - manager in 1907 - continued the business under his name, until 1925. From 1926 the business was owned by Van Allen. This bottle was acquired in an internet sale.
