No. 21.33.1 A, B, C Subject Category: Citizens of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1926 Object: Calculator, mechanical Description: A metal stylus operated calculator (A) with 7 dials, with numbers 0-9, backed with green felt, in an oblong California Rosewood stand and original black buckram leather-look cardboard box (C). The calculator has stamped lettering in white: -- The -- SMALLWOOD CALCULCATOR OAKLAND, CAL. The wooden case rests on 4 rubber feet, has a triangular confirmation so the calculator, when placed in the large recess, is at a 30-degree angle and has a further narrow, oblong recess, for a stylus. Cardboard box is missing its sides, and has no label or print. Size calculator: L 12" x W 2 1/2", wooden case: L 13 1/4" x W 4" x 2" tapering to 1/4". History of Object: Calculator used by Glass artist Albert Stagnaro, in his Oakland glass studio, used for various business needs. The Smallwood Calculator was an invention by Russell W.
