Acc. No.: 81.91.1 Subject Category: Post Office (Alameda) Date: Circa 1900 Object: Mail Box Description: Cast iron. The colors are red, white and blue. It has raised lettering stating U.S. Mail, Reading Stove Works, Reading, Pennsylvania on the right side in raised cast letters painted white. There is also the motif of an outstretched eagle on the top, sides, and in front of the mail box. Door with hasp lock on the side for removing letters. Front panel contains metal frame in which could be placed information relating to pick-up times, et cetera. Tongue at top that lifts rol-type cover. The top of mail box is arched. Size: Height: 223 inches. It is 12 inches across by 8 inches wide. History of Object: This iron mail box was removed from San Antonio Avenue and Grand Street in 1926. It was at this location for many years. It was then placed at Washington Street and Versailles Avenue and used until September 1957. Letter carrier service was started from the main office November 1, 1890. Acquired from: Date: June, 1958
