Description: Oblong-shaped sea chest, crudely constructed of wood with hinged lid. Exterior of chest with false graining, emulating quarter sawn oak. Interior of lid same. Mortise lock which appears to be cast iron. Exterior base of chest has protruding molding with cap. Chest lifts at both ends consist of wooden straps attached with screws, with bale handles of rope.
Size: height 16 1/2" x depth 17 1/2" x width 37 1/2".
History of Object: Sea captain's chest originally owned by Fred Toye, native of Nova Scotia, an early resident of Alameda. He came to this city in the late 1880's and had a home built, which is still standing at 3210 Encinal Avenue.
