Description: It is a shadow box frame. Ornate gesso frame and it has a cast flower motif. The frame encloses a scale model of a four masted sailing ship and three smaller ships, one being steam.
Size: 34 inches by 21¼ inches. Depth of shadow box is 3¼ inches.
History of Object: This originally hung in the August Borgwardt family home. They were an early pioneer family of Alameda. August Borgwardt made this sailing ship model by hand in 1880. He gave it to his future bride, Margarita Williges, of San Francisco. This is the model of the ship August Borgwardt sailed from Germany passing through the Golden Gate. Small towing tug on the left, and pilot boat on the right. Also small fishing boat foreground. He was born in 1860.
